More than a century of sparkling history
After a first attempt in 1902, the sparkling wine producers took off in the 1960s
In 1902 the Überetscher champagne winery in Appiano produces a sparkling wine out of Riesling grapes according tho the classic champagne method. Through the annex of Alto Adige to Italy, the entire wine industry of the country records a market loss. Despite all the effort, the sparkling wine production comes to a standstill primarily for economic reasons.
Only in the early sixties the region begins to approach again the production of the sparkling drink. In the seventies some of the most important wineries arise. In 1990 Alto Adige’s producers merge to the Association of Alto Adige Sparkling Wine Producers.
